Coping With Anticipated Grief

We don’t just experience grief after a loss - we often experience “anticipatory grief” beforehand.

If someone we love becomes seriously ill, or if we’re concerned about upcoming hardships of any kind, we naturally begin to grieve at that moment. The process of anticipatory grief is normal but can be confusing and painful. This discussion will help you understand and befriend your grief and find effective ways to express it.

Topics to be covered include:

  • What anticipatory grief is and what causes it
  • How anticipatory grief is different from regular grief
  • Why grief and mourning are not the same
  • How to care for and love someone who is dying

This webinar is based on "Expected Loss: Coping with Anticipatory Grief," by Alan D Wolfelt, Ph.D., director of the Center for Loss and Life Transition and a member of the faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
