Irish Life in 20th-Century Ireland Through Literature, Part 2 of a series exploring Irish traditions and literary works, provides an introduction to 20th-century Irish writing and considers how history and writers' representations of society have influenced Irish identities. The speaker is Dr. Elizabeth Stack, executive director of the Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany, N.Y.

In particular, we will examine how the portrayal of women evolved as the country changed from colony to republic. Some of the themes to be included are:

  • The differing roles of men and women in Irish literature
  • Sex and society
  • Betrothal, marriage and motherhood
  • Class and social status
