If there is one thing the Irish are known for, it is that they know how to celebrate! From Fair Days and harvests to Pattern Days, wakes, and ceilis, the Irish can transform any event into a party.
But did you know there are ancient Celtic and sometimes pagan or religious roots to these celebrations? This presentation by Dr. Elizabeth Stack, executive director of the Irish American Heritage Museum in Albany, N.Y., will explore such traditions and Irish holidays like St. Brigid's Day, Samhain, Lughnasa and Bealtaine.
She will also discuss customs surrounding birth, marriage and death. See what old customs Ireland has kept, and what superstitions still inform everyday life.
Part 2 of the series, Irish Life in 20th-Century Ireland Through Literature, will take place on March 7.
