While swing dancers can be found in every corner of the world, twirling their partners at breakneck speeds, did you know that swing dance got its start in New York City?

This online class will explore the past, present and future of swing dance, from its beginnings on the jazz hall dance floors of 1920s Harlem. Led by world champion swing dancer Bobby White, the virtual experience, bound to get your feet tapping, will cover:

  • The origins of swing dance and its Black American roots
  • The cultural significance of Harlem nightlife during New York's Jazz Age
  • The rise in popularity of swing dance
  • The 101 on different swing dance styles, including lindy hop, shag, and balboa

Afterward, we’ll have a Q&A with Bobby, and all questions are welcome!
