Revisiting the Underground Railroad

In the first session of our series on the Underground Railroad, we’ll explore the legacy of abolitionist John Brown.

The Underground Railroad, often imagined as characterized by tunnels and dark-of-night escapes, was far more complex than these ideas have led us to believe.

To gain a better understanding of the broader movement, join AARP New York, John Brown Lives! and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation for the virtual program John Brown and Radical Empathy.

We’ll explore the life and legacy of abolitionist John Brown, including:

  • His belief in human equality and his commitment to ending slavery
  • His ties to the Underground Railroad, the Kansas wars and the Harper’s Ferry Raid
  • Current activities at the historic John Brown Farm in the Adirondack Mountains

Be sure to register for the other programs in this series: Revisiting the Underground Railroad on Feb. 14 and John W. Jones - Unsung American Hero on Feb. 21.

A separate registration is required for each session in this series. Sign in to your AARP.org account or create an account to register for events. AARP membership is not required. You will receive an email with the Zoom link before class.
