The civil rights movement is one of the most important movements of 20th-century American history. Brave Americans faced violence, beatings, bombings and killings as they worked to overturn Jim Crow laws that had denied African Americans their Constitutional rights.

This four-part series offered by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University will look at four leaders in the civil rights movement. In this class, we’ll examine the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr., under whose leadership the movement chose non-violence. Other sessions will explore:

  • Feb. 1: John Lewis
  • Feb. 8: Rosa Parks
  • Feb. 15: Mary McLeod Bethune

Instructor Elva Card taught world history and psychology in Fairfax County Public Schools for 31 years.
