Aging in Community: Lessons From Eastern Band of Cherokee Culture

In recognition of National Native American Heritage Month, we’ll explore the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indian points of view on aging, community and place.

The vast majority of older adults want to “age in place,” but what does that mean? Many of our Indigenous neighbors have a different perspective on aging, intergenerational wisdom and sense of place and community. Understanding this perspective may help us all develop new attitudes and an appreciation for the intersection of land, community and age.

Join AARP North Carolina and the Museum of the Cherokee Indian for this three-part series. Session #2: Sense of Place and Space will tune in to the oral history of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians that honors place as a central component for building community. This interactive session will explore the relationships among place, animals, symbols and community.
