A Look at Three Ancient Aegean Civilizations

Three civilizations flourished in the Aegean Sea region prior to the rise of the Greeks: the Cycladic, the Minoan and the Mycenaean. This two-part exploration, presented by retired art historian Roz Hoadland for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University, will introduce these cultures and their art.

This class will focus on the Cycladic period, from which only abstract marble statues remain. It will also introduce the Minoan culture on the island of Crete, which boasted large rambling palaces with frescoed walls.

The second class, on Nov. 8, will continue our discussion of the Minoans and move on to the Mycenaeans, who were based in fortified citadels on the Greek mainland and built beehive tombs.
