Ageism in Health Care (and How to Overcome It)

Maura Quinlan, MD MPH, the Women’s Health Medical Advisor at the Illinois Department of Public Health, and Rob Mapes, V.P. and Director of Programs and Community Support at AgeOptions, will participate in a 30-minute conversation about how ageism in health care and public health can affect the quality of care that older adults receive and how to overcome it. A medical professional may exhibit age bias when dismissing symptoms as a result of aging rather than as a sign of a treatable condition, for example, or by considering an older patient a lower priority for certain procedures or treatments than younger patients. We encourage attendees to share their questions and comments in the Facebook and/or YouTube feed to actively participate in the discussion.
