Throughout the Smithsonian Institution, there are initiatives to make museums more representative of the whole of America. In this program offered by the Lifetime Learning Institute of Northern Virginia, Smithsonian docent and LLI instructor Sara Shoob will guide us as we examine works from the Smithsonian American Art Museum and Renwick Gallery and the roles culture, race and gender play in an artist’s work. These artworks, which grapple with our complicated past and contemporary events, are chosen to inspire us and provoke our thinking. LLI/NOVA is affiliated with the Annandale campus of Northern Virginia Community College.
