An Introduction to African American Genealogy

If you’re interested in researching your family tree, find out how to tackle some of the challenges.

Although the genealogy tools that help people research family history have become more accessible, the process of tracing ancestry can be especially complex for the African American community due to a lack of government records and the country’s history with slavery. Census records prior to the end of the Civil War did not identify enslaved people by name, for example.

AARP MA is partnering with the Afro-American Historical and Genealogical Society – New England, Inc. and the Greater Boston Section of the National Council of Negro Women to offer a webinar focused specifically on African American genealogy. Dr. Kenvi Phillips, vice president of AAHGS-NE, will dive into the unique experiences and challenges that the Black community may face when trying to trace their family ancestry and offer guidance on what resources are available. Dr. Phillips will be joined by GBS-NCNW President Lisa Braxton to answer any questions participants may have.
