Crimes and the Psychopath

This class, the first in a four-part series, will examine the Lindbergh kidnapping case.

The conventional tale of the 1932 Lindbergh kidnapping - that the 20-month-old son of world-famous aviator Charles Lindbergh died as the result of a man’s accidental fall from the ladder used to abduct him - is not supported by the evidence. It was an intentional murder committed by a never-caught German immigrant deli clerk from the Bronx named John Knoll.

This class, presented by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at George Mason University, is the first of two sessions on the Lindbergh case featuring speaker Robert Zorn, author of “Cemetery John: The Undiscovered Mastermind of the Lindbergh Kidnapping,” whose father as a teenager witnessed three men conspiring to commit the crime. He is the first person to conduct an in-depth scientific re-examination of the “Crime of the Century,” from planning stage to post-offense behavior. The importance of the scientific method and of gumshoe detective work will be highlighted, as well as of open-mindedness, imagination, curiosity and a willingness to admit mistakes.

The classes in the series will be held weekly on Tuesdays through May 16. The other topics are:

May 2: Part 2 of the Lindbergh story

May 9: Forensic Explosion Investigations: Accident or Bombing

May 16: The FBI Profiler and the Psychopath: A Glimpse into the Mind of This Most Devastating Personality Disorder
