What Historical Clothing Reveals

Learn how 17th- and 18th-century fashions and clothing help tell the story of Virginia’s Jamestown.

Fashion stands for more than just style, and historical clothing helps tell the stories of the real people and events of early America. In this online history presentation about clothing in early Virginia, discover how two living history museums, Jamestown Settlement and the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown, reconstruct clothing from the 17th and 18th centuries to represent the three cultures—Indigenous, European and African—that originally converged at Jamestown. These cultural groups continued to influence each other and the development of Virginia in the 18th century and during the Revolutionary War.
