An elderly martial arts expert (Pat Morita) teaches a high schooler (Ralph Macchio) to defend himself from bullies.

“The Karate Kid” follows Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), a teenager taught karate by Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita) to help defend himself against the teens bullying him and compete against them in a tournament. One of them is Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), the ex-boyfriend of his love interest, Ali Mills (Elisabeth Shue).
