Legal Affairs: How LGBTQ+ Individuals Can Protect Themselves and Their Loved Ones

If you’re concerned about the future of Marriage Equality, learn how to ensure that your final wishes are carried out.

As we age, confronting the truth about our own mortality can be frightening. Our final wishes are a way of making sure our passing is handled with respect and dignity. But if they are not legally documented, your family is not obligated to carry them out.

Before the sweeping Obergerfell v. Hodges (2015) United States Supreme Court decision made state bans on same-sex marriages unconstitutional, the LGBTQ+ community has relied on individual state laws regarding same-sex unions. With the recent SCOTUS decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization overturning Roe v. Wade (1973), the fundamental right to marriage equality could be reviewed.

In this session, Mike Casterlow, Esq., of The Elderlaw Firm in Greensboro, N.C, will discuss the potential impact of the recent SCOTUS decision on Marriage Equality, and how couples can protect themselves against the possibility that their legal rights could change. To make sure that your wishes are carried out and that your loved ones are protected, you MUST make sure your legal documents are in order. While he practices law in North Carolina, the information and advice that he will cover will be helpful no matter where you live.
