Unity360 Critical Race Film Series: The Breakfast Club Film and Discussion

About this event

John Hughes movies arguably defined the 80s teen film genre and helped shape the world views of many Gen Xers. Thirty-five years ago, films like Sixteen Candles, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Pretty in Pink, and The Breakfast Club taught young audiences the importance of being yourself, standing up to bullies, and having some fun along the way.

Like most films, however, they reflect societal perspectives of the time. While watching The Breakfast Club may bring up some warm-fuzzies for some older viewers, might it land differently with young people today?

Hop on at 6pm to catch the film and stick around after to see how The Breakfast Club stands up to the critical eyes of our lead young panelists, Mahoro Amani and Jade Thompson, and the family and friends they invite to the discussion!

When: March 26 at 6pm film screening with discussion immediately to follow.

Cost: By donation

Where: Eventive platform

About Unity360 Critical Race Film Series 2022

As a genre, teen films can be silly fun or heartbreaking, but there is no denying popular teen films not only reflect society’s views of teenagers at the time, but also perpetuate these views - and help shape how teens see themselves. This year’s Unity360 Critical Race Film Series will explore the impact of these films across the decades and their implicit messaging, for better or worse. Discussion panels will be led by teens and the adults they invite to the space for an intergenerational perspective in analysis of race, gender, sexual orientation and other relevant aspects of identity.
