What's the Plan: Senior Housing Choices

https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84623229912

At some point in time, many older adults will find themselves facing tough decisions about their housing options. There are many living arrangements that can be considered, and it’s important to understand the various options.

Housing options

Aging in place (staying in current home)

Many older adults choose to stay in their current homes and live independently.

To determine if this is a good option for you, ask yourself:

  • Are you able to live safely at home?
  • Can you modify your home to meet future needs?
  • Can family members provide some help?
  • Are there transportation services?
  • What types of services are available in your community?

There are many services available for older adults who live at home, including:

  • Companion services
  • Personal or home care/home health aides
  • Home health care
  • Household services and home maintenance
  • Emergency alert services
  • Check-in services
  • Adult day care
  • Senior/community centers

Shared or congregate housing2

  • Shared and congregate housing options often offer less responsibility and more companionship.
  • Shared housing involves having a roommate Each person usually has their own bedroom, but common areas are shared.
  • Congregate senior housing typically consists of small apartments with access to common areas.
